Look at that kit! Motherwell (Away) 92-94

If somebody were to mention kit manufacturer Hummel and the year 1992, most people would, understandably, jump straight to thoughts of Denmark and their against-all-odds European Championship triumph. The Danes looked sharp on the winners’ podium, clad in their iconic red and white kit, manufactured by their country’s most famous sporting brand.

That same summer, in a slightly less celebrated moment, Motherwell launched their very own Hummel kits. The home jersey didn’t differ greatly from the previous season’s amber top with a horizontal claret band across the middle – if it ain’t broke etc. However, the away kit was an absolute classic.

A claret polo collar with amber trim provided a classy nod to Motherwell’s home top. For the body of the jersey, Hummel opted for a white top with thick claret stripes running diagonally across. Much thinner claret stripes cut across the top in the opposite direction. Hummel’s signature chevrons provided the finishing touch on each sleeve.

This was the Steelmen’s away jersey for two seasons. The first, 1992/93, provided little to celebrate as Tommy McLean’s men finished in ninth-place, only six points and two places above the relegation zone. However, the following campaign, Motherwell came agonisingly close to the league title. In a punishing 44-game calendar, the Steelmen finished only four points behind champions Rangers and a single point behind runners-up Aberdeen.

The Well’s two-year association with Hummel came to an end in 1994 when American brand Pony – newcomers to the Scottish kit market – took on design responsibilities in North Lanarkshire.
